Looking for a drummer? Look no more. Get a Cajon! Print E-mail

Every local church is in desperate need of a drummer. A band like us, like all other not-so-gifted worship bands, needs a drummer. Here is a good news. No need to look for a drummer. Buy Cajon and get one of your dedicated member start playing it within a week. It is affordable (about $100) and easy to learn. It is a dream-come-true for many drummer wannabes. It adds so much to a band and if you do not have percussion in your band, it is worth trying out. You will get a lot of mileage out of this fabulous instrument.

We recently lost our drummer and started using Cajon during our worship service. It is quite impressive. If you get good, you can create snare, rim shot, and kick drum sounds. I included a YouTube video on how to play Cajon below. Enjoy!

You have to learn Palm Muting Print E-mail
You have to learn Palm Muting. It is so essential to create better rhythm and direction of a song. Yes, no effect box can do this for you. I took this technique for granted for so long and it is about time for me to master it. I quickly realized it is not an easy skill to master once I started working on it. The key is where you place your palm to create muting effect. It took me for long time to find that sweet spot for my strat. As I move along the different strings, I have to find that sweet spots and it is challenging while playing a song.

These are few videos that I found helpful. Enjoy, and practice, practice, & practice...

Lincoln Brewster's Parking Lot Concert Print E-mail

I was able to catch him at Angels baseball stadium parking lot doing his stuff today. Yes, it was true. He was using Line 6 POD X3 LIVE with Boss Overdrive only! No fancy set up of amps and pedals. The sound from his guitar was just amazing. Hey, if he has the same gear that I have, how come I don't sound like him? Once again it was a confirmation that the tone comes from the fingers not from the gears.

Here are some pictures from the front row. Sorry, my Blackberry pictures are not that great. Click on them to enlarge.

Free Worship Leader's Tool - Updated Print E-mail

I have heard that my free program for the worship leader, Access Praise!, was not working properly for some reason for a few people. I repackaged the install program with the latest Microsoft Access Runtime in Office 2007 environment. I hope this will help some of you who love the program but was not able to use in Vista or the latest office environment. Also, hopefully this version has addressed some bugs that I was not even aware of.

Please download the Access Praise! 2009 HERE, the older version, Access Praise! 2008, HERE.
Again, for the instructions on how to use the program, please go HERE.

Enjoy!

Only A God Like You Tab - Intro Print E-mail

I have been looking to learn "Only A God Like You" by Tommy Walker for the longest time. Some tabs online has not really satisfy me and was beyond my skill level. So I tried to duplicate the sound as much as I can and this tab is the result of that quest. See below my YouTube video and the tab. I know it is not the best sound nor close to the original but it works. I am still working on the beat. So please excuse my timing. Enjoy!

"Who is the best guitarist in the world?" Print E-mail

I stumbled on this article in Wikipedia that says Jimi Hendrix named Phil Keaggy as the best guitar player in the world. That is a rumor. No one can prove that he actually said that. But if you see this video, you might believe that might be actually true. I just could not believe my eyes to see what he can do with his guitar. If you don't know him and never heard of him before, you have been missing out. He is just amazing. Enjoy!

Love Came Down by Ben Cantelon Print E-mail

I want to introduce a song that has been working in my heart. Ben Cantelon is a worship leader for Soul Survivor in England. Love Came Down is easy to sing and people loves to sing because it builds up very nicely to the chorus with meaningful lyrics.

My favorite part is the chorus.

I've found a love greater than life itself
I've found a hope stronger and nothing compares
I once was lost, now I'm alive in You

Enjoy the YouTube Video below and log in to download the chord sheet below the article.

Love Came Down
Ben Cantelon - Daylight Breaks Through - Love Came Down
Ben Cantelon

When I call on Your name, You answer
When I fall, You are there by my side
You delivered me out of darkness
Now I stand in the hope of new life (x2)

[Pre-Chorus]
By grace I'm free, You've rescued me
All I am is Yours

[Chorus]
I've found a love greater than life itself
I've found a hope stronger and nothing compares
I once was lost, now I'm alive in You

[Verse 2]
You're my God and my firm foundation
It is You whom I'll trust at all times
I give glory and praise, adoration
To my Saviour who's seated on high

[Bridge]
Love came down and rescued me
I thank You, I thank You
I once was blind, but now I see
I see You, I see You

Download Free Album by Phil Wickham Print E-mail

Phil Wickham has the "singlaong" album for free download at this website, http://philwickham.com/

I was browsing through my iPod and landed at this album. I was very impressed by how people singalong with him with such passion. It sounds like an acoustic guitar is the only instrument in this album. It reminded me of how we "singalong" together at Friday Bible Study with guitar during my college days.

Here is a video of him introducing "singalong"

And here is a video of my favorite song in the album, "Cannons"

Blessed Be Your Name - A Power Chord Progression Print E-mail
I was trying to figure out how to best play this song. Since my approach is always how to play the simplest way, I had to figure out the power chords to start with. It turns out it was indeed very simple and sounded good. I think anyone can play this song. It is the same chord progression over and over again and I thought it is an excellent power chords practice song. We sing this song in A, which seems work well with our congregation. I attached the chord sheet below.  This is a good starting point and you can build the song upon these power chords. Let me know how it goes!

Here is the chord chart. Just repeat these chords over and over again. Enjoy!
